The Taj Mahal, striking from afar for its proportions, is equally awe-inspiring on closer examination for its exquisite detailing. This mausoleum, was commissioned in 1632 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, for his queen Mumtaz Mahal. It is perhaps the most admired and best known of all Indian monuments. Nobel laureate, and poet Rabindranath Tagore, described the Taj as “the tear-drop on the cheek of time”. It is considered by many to be the best example of Mughal architecture and a symbol of India’s rich history.
