The Bhils, like the Gonds and the Santhals, are adivasis, or the indigenous people of India. These tribes inhabit the central and northwestern regions of the country. Bhil culture is vibrantly depicted in the art that decorates their homes. While traditional Indian tribal art usually takes the form of firm outlines filled by colouring, Bhil painting distinguishes itself with a technique akin to the aboriginal art of Africa and Australia. The Bhils create a unique texture with fine dabs of paint made from vegetables and earthen colours.
